GERALD ALFRED PLANT
Gerald Alfred Plant - Military Story
On October 19,1942 Gerald Alfred Plant, son of Garnet and Mary Frances (Hillman) Plant made his way to London, Ontario to enlist in the RCAF to serve his county overseas in World War II. As a young man of 19, it was very difficult for his family to say good-bye to a son, brother and grandson. When he enlisted his dream was to serve his country as a pilot, however, he was not chosen to fly, but to serve as ground personnel. After his training at Wainwright Alberta (to the best of my recollection) he was sent overseas and was stationed in the countries of Germany, Belgium, France, Holland and England. Dad did not talk much about his experiences during the war, but I remember one story where a little girl would come to a fence around the base camp and he would take her a loaf of bread and some apples for her to take back to her Grandmother. It was this kindness that got him an invitation to this little girl’s birthday party. During his time in England, he met a young woman, named Margaret Graham in London. They became engaged in a bomb shelter behind her flat during one of his leaves to London. On April 7, 1945 Gerald and Margaret married. Following his discharge on March 29, 1946 he came back to settle in Windsor, Ontario awaiting the arrival of his new bride. Along with hundreds of other warbrides, Margaret sailed from England to Canada in May 1946. Gerald and Margaret bought a house and moved to South Woodslee, Ontario with their 3 young daughters in 1954. Written by: Brenda Kellington (daughter) |
