MILITARY CAREER OF ROBERT NORWOOD #131107

- Born August 12, 1918 in Windsor, Ontario.
- Enlisted in R.C.A.F. on August 12, 1940 in Windsor.
- Pilot training at #6 Service Flying School - Dunnville, Ontario.
- Obtained his wings and commission as a Pilot Officer in 1941 in Dunnville.
- Pilot instructor training at Central Instructors Flying School, Trenton, Ontario.
- Posted to #14 SFTS in June of 1941 as a Flying Instructor. In 1943 was officer commanding the auxillary field near St. Thomas where final test were given young air training plan pilots.
- Posted overseas after Twin Course at Brantford, Ontario to Spitfire unit at Ternhill, UK.
- Returned to Canada and discharged in September 1945 with rank of Flight Lieutenant.
- In 1950 Robert joined Windsor Chipmunk Squadron and flew until 1956 when he was transferred to the R.C.A.F. 2451 Air Craft and Warning Squadron (Auxillary).
- In 1958 promoted to Squadron Leader of R.C.A.F. 2451 Squadron.
- In the fall of 1961 all AC&W Squadrons were disbanned. Robert was then promoted to the rank of Wing Commander and attached to R.C.A.F. Wing #16 Hamilton and appointed Senior Air Force Representative for the area.
- Discharged in 1963.
- Founder/Charter member of the Windsor & Detroit Armed Forces Council.
- Charter member of the Windsor Military Institute.
- Life member of #6 R.C.A.F. Station Dunnville, Ontario.
- Member of the War Birds of the R.C.A.F.
- Died July 19, 2008 in Windsor, Ontario.
- At wake, he received a fly-over by 1944 Spitfire flown by owner, Ottawa resident Michael Potter.
