ALBERT JOSEPH JUBENVILLE
September 26, 2014 In 1942 I was part of a Lancaster bomber squadron. We were in Leeming, Yorkshire, England. We had 33 Lancasters on our base. There were 7 men per plane. We were strictly doing night raids from Leeming, England into Belgium, Holland, Germany and down the Rhine river. We were assigned to remove bridges on the Rhine. We were actively attacked by Junker JU 88’s. Many of the British women (WAFS) were killed on our base. The Germans came out of France across the English Channel and attacked us. I was very fortunate to survive. I saw many horrific sights. Many of our aircraft on the ground were destroyed. Another assignment was delivering manna to Holland for the starving citizens. We dropped bundles of food with parachutes while flying low. There was an agreement with the local Germans that we would not be shot down if we were delivering food. When I was on my way to Okanawa with a group of volunteers, the war ended with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I am very blessed to be healthy and able to tell this short story at the age of 88 years. Thank you. Albert Joseph Jubenville |
