Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - David Backes had four goals and Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots for his second shutout of the season to give the St. Louis Blues a 6-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist while Jaden Schwartz also scored for the Blues, who have won their past two. Mike Smith allowed all six goals on 39 shots for the Coyotes, who have lost two of three. Stastny scored his goal at 7:57 of the first period to give the Blues a 1-0 lead as a turnover by Arizona to the right of its net was taken advantage of by Stastny for his eighth goal of the year. Backes then scored the next four goals to tie a career-high he set on April 2, 2009 against Detroit. Skating on the power play, the Blues made it a 2-0 game when Backes buried a nice setup from T.J. Oshie at the left side of the net at 6:15 of the second. It was Backes on the power play again just over a minute later as he rushed in the Arizona zone and shot the puck into the left corner for a 3-0 lead. Backes capped the hat trick with 5:07 to play in the middle period as he finished off a rush play with a wrister from the left circle, and he made it a 5-0 game just 3:15 into the third when he crashed the net and tapped it an Alex Steen pass. Schwartz scored just under three minutes later on the power play to cap the scoring. Game Notes Elliott has 27 career shutouts ... St. Louis hosts San Jose on Thursday ...
